PERELMAN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER REVIEWED BY MICHAEL KIMMELMAN IN THE NEWYORK TIMES
September 13, 2023

We sincerely thank Michael Kimmelman, architecture critic of The New York Times, for his thoughtful review of our design for the Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center in New York. In Kimmelman’s words, “After dark, when the memorial park across the street empties and office workers head home, Perelman lights up like a lantern. Its white stone turns amber. And chandeliers in the towering corridor hugging the center’s curtain wall cast the silhouettes of milling theatergoers onto the glowing marble, summoning the neighborhood back to life.”

SHENZHEN OPERA HOUSE RELEASED
March 23, 2021

We are pleased to present REX’s design for the Shenzhen Opera House (SOH) competition. Our entry was developed in two versions. In the semi-final round, SOH 1.0 contrasts today’s prevailing archetype for performing arts centers—the “blanket of iconography”—by stacking its program into a tower. In the competition’s final round, SOH 2.0 addresses the jury’s comments by maximizing use of the site, and splitting the former tower into two iconic buildings to soften the design. While not awarded the project, we believe the designs and the ideas behind them represent some of our best work. We will be posting images from both proposals over the coming weeks.

THE PERELMAN CENTER FACADE UPDATE
November 18, 2020
For many months now, we have been composing the four translucent marble facades of The Perelman Center. 4,896 5’ x 3’ stone tiles (laminated into glass units) are combined by resemblance into 612 quadruplets of book-matched pairs, creating four identical book-matched facades. Shown here are 45 of these beautiful pair quadruplets. Soon we will share a glimpse into the crazy-intense ‘magic’ that has gone into designing the facades.
A particular shoutout to REX architect Wanjiao Chen for her tireless efforts creating the pair quadruplets and composing the facades.

ELIZABETH QUAY 5 & 6 PROJECT APPROVED
October 30, 2020

Our Elizabeth Quay 5 & 6 (EQ 5 & 6) project—which has been in the works for the past four years—was granted approval on Monday by the City of Perth to advance through to construction. The two-tower development includes offices, a hotel, luxury residences, retail, and food & beverage. In the taller tower, an amenities zone is inserted 63-meters-high between the office and hotel/residential blocks in a dynamic cantilever that exposes the activities inside and offers views of the beautiful Swan River and its bridges. Elevating the public amenities eliminates the need for the traditional plinth of commercial developments, liberating the street-level to become an urban pedestrian public space—the Galleria—fully activated with retail, restaurants, and café terraces along this popular waterfront promenade.

Working alongside our collaborators at HASSELL, we look forward to delivering EQ 5 & 6 as a landmark destination for the City of Light.

Ronald-Perelman-Donor

June 30, 2016

Ronald O. Perelman announced yesterday that he will donate $75 million to the Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PACWTC). Mr. Perelman has shown enthusiastic support of our design for the PAC and is demonstrating once more his continued support of the performing arts in New York with this generous gift. We are deeply grateful.

From an interview with Michael Cooper of The New York Times: “I would hope it is the first venue of choice for the Bruce Springsteens and the Bon Jovis and the Yo-Yo Mas and the Lang Langs, and at the same time it’s a place where we could have produced a “Hamilton” project or where we could produce a new ballet,” he [Ronald Perelman] said. He added that he was excited by the technological possibilities of the plans, which call for adding cutting-edge streaming capabilities that will allow the center to capture and disseminate performances in a much more immersive, sophisticated way than is done at most theaters.”

November 19, 2015

On this of all days, REX is deeply saddened by the passing of John Zuccotti. As Chairman of the PACWTC Board and Co-Chairman of Brookfield Properties, Mr. Zuccotti has shown our firm tremendous faith and support for many years, for which we will remain forever grateful. He was a vocal friend of our city with a rich legacy in our streets, our minds, and our hearts. We joins thousands of others in presenting our heartfelt condolences to his family, PACWTC, Brookfield Properties, and all whose lives his brilliance touched.

img-19

November 2015

We are thrilled to announce that REX has won the invitational to design PACWTC, an approximately 80,000 sf building that will serve as a major new addition to New York’s cultural landscape, producing and premiering works of theater, dance, music, musical theater, opera, and film, as well as productions that cross multiple disciplines.

“Throughout the architectural selection process, REX presented us with an inspired vision. Joshua [Prince-Ramus] totally blew us away with his innovative ideas about how to present cutting-edge culture, but also about how to make the PAC relate to everyone who comes to the WTC site – workers, residents, and visitors. The team we have assembled – REX, Davis Brody Bond, Charcoalblue, and DBI – are all leaders in their fields, and we know that we are in good hands. New York City will soon have a brilliant cultural facility in the heart of Downtown Manhattan.” Maggie Boepple, PACWTC President and Director.

A fantastic article by the Commercial Observer tells the story of how REX’s Winter Garden “floating platform” design led to Brookfield Property Partners’ selecting our firm to reimagine the concrete, pyramid-shaped 450 West 33rd Street, now called Five Manhattan West. “We thought of Joshua, because we really needed out-of-the-box thinking for it—someone who didn’t color in the lines.”—Sabrina Kanner, an executive vice president at Brookfield.  Here is to open-minded clients!

September 2015

We are honored and humbled to announce that Joshua Prince-Ramus has been awarded the Marcus Prize, which recognizes architects ‘with a commitment to design excellence, innovation, and a willingness to meet new challenges.’ The Prize is supported by the Marcus Corporation Foundation and administered by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

The jury noted REX’s “exuberant yet carefully-considered designs possess a broader cultural significance.” Blair Kamin, jury member and Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, added: “They symbolize and help drive the millennial generation’s rediscovery of the city. We eagerly anticipate Joshua’s interaction with, and influence on, the design and real estate communities of Milwaukee and the upper Midwest.”

We are very grateful to the Marcus Corporation as well as the University and the jury—Blair Kamin; Tom Fisher, former Dean and Director of the Metropolitan Design Center at the University of Minnesota; Philip Hamp, FAIA, Principal, Vinci/Hamp Architects; and Robert Greenstreet, Dean, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning—for their support and faith in our practice.

Equality

June 2015

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.

The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.

It is so ordered.”

MEDIA HEADQUARTERS BUILDINGS
Middle East
April 2014

REX is pleased to release our Media Headquarters Buildings design. The 240,200 m² (2,600,000 sf) design for sister media companies features offices, studios, and common facilities (agora, amphitheater, auditorium, café, canteen, employee lounge, executive lounge, fine dining, gallery, health club, majlis, and theater).

Both sides of each tower incorporate 14.5 m (47.5 ft) diameter, retractable sunshades to shield the headquarters from the unrelenting Middle Eastern sun. The geometry and overlap of the sunshades reference a traditional Arab Mashrabiya pattern, meeting the media companies’ shared desire for infusing the buildings with local iconography.

The project has been nominated for an AZ People’s Choice Award in the Unbuilt Competitions category! Click here to vote (you must register first).

Each label will have its own distinct space in the house.
