We are thrilled to announce that The Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World trade Center has been honored with a 2017 P/A Award.
“The factors that make architecture progressive can be hard to pin down, but that was the challenge facing the 2017 P/A Awards jury—just as it has been for the 63 juries that have come before. This year’s 12 winners represent design that pushes the envelope, novel methods of representation, and an exploration of humble building types that can make peoples’ lives better. If that isn’t progressive, then what is?” says Architect magazine.
More about the award on Architect
On Saturday November 12, Joshua will present The Perelman Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s symposium, In Our Time: A Year of Architecture in a Day. The panel session, starting at 4:30PM, is entitled “New York Under Construction: On the Horizon,” and will be moderated by Julian Rose.
The Met’s daylong symposium presents a global view of contemporary architecture, with discussions led by architects, curators, theorists, photographers, and filmmakers.
We are pleased to present our design for this new museum adjacent to the Mies van der Rohe-designed Neue Nationalgalerie in the heart of Berlin’s Kulturforum. The 318,000 sf building consolidates the Nationalgalerie’s holdings of 20ᵗʰ century art, the Marx, Pietzsch, and Marzona Collections, and works from the Museum of Prints & Drawings and the Art Library’s museum collection.

We are thrilled to present our design for the Ronald O. Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (The Perelman Center). Started two years ago with an international competition and through many evolutions since winning, our concept for this performing art house on one of the most important sites in New York City expresses the Center’s mission and ambitions with a pioneering multi-form and multi-procession ‘Mystery Box.’

June 30, 2016
Ronald O. Perelman announced yesterday that he will donate $75 million to the Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center (PACWTC). Mr. Perelman has shown enthusiastic support of our design for the PAC and is demonstrating once more his continued support of the performing arts in New York with this generous gift. We are deeply grateful.
From an interview with Michael Cooper of The New York Times: “I would hope it is the first venue of choice for the Bruce Springsteens and the Bon Jovis and the Yo-Yo Mas and the Lang Langs, and at the same time it’s a place where we could have produced a “Hamilton” project or where we could produce a new ballet,” he [Ronald Perelman] said. He added that he was excited by the technological possibilities of the plans, which call for adding cutting-edge streaming capabilities that will allow the center to capture and disseminate performances in a much more immersive, sophisticated way than is done at most theaters.”
We are excited to be selected in the design competition for the Museum of the 20th Century in Berlin. Set next to the Neue Nationalgalerie designed by Mies van der Rohe, the new building will display “internationally significant art collections”.

Fast Company, June 2016
Fast Company interviewed Joshua Prince-Ramus on the innovative glass curtain wall of 2050 M Street, a premium office building that will host CBS News Washington Bureau, amongst other tenants. “The curtain wall is composed of subtly curved windows that make the structure appear to melt into the downtown DC cityscape. Cleverly, it also adds floor space.”

Projects such as the Seattle Central Library, Vakko Fashion Center, Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre, Necklace Residence and Five Manhattan West will be presented alongside details of REX’s philosophy and approach to design.

November 19, 2015
On this of all days, REX is deeply saddened by the passing of John Zuccotti. As Chairman of the PACWTC Board and Co-Chairman of Brookfield Properties, Mr. Zuccotti has shown our firm tremendous faith and support for many years, for which we will remain forever grateful. He was a vocal friend of our city with a rich legacy in our streets, our minds, and our hearts. We joins thousands of others in presenting our heartfelt condolences to his family, PACWTC, Brookfield Properties, and all whose lives his brilliance touched.
We are thrilled to announce that REX has won the invitational to design PACWTC, an approximately 80,000 sf building that will serve as a major new addition to New York’s cultural landscape, producing and premiering works of theater, dance, music, musical theater, opera, and film, as well as productions that cross multiple disciplines.
“Throughout the architectural selection process, REX presented us with an inspired vision. Joshua [Prince-Ramus] totally blew us away with his innovative ideas about how to present cutting-edge culture, but also about how to make the PAC relate to everyone who comes to the WTC site – workers, residents, and visitors. The team we have assembled – REX, Davis Brody Bond, Charcoalblue, and DBI – are all leaders in their fields, and we know that we are in good hands. New York City will soon have a brilliant cultural facility in the heart of Downtown Manhattan.” Maggie Boepple, PACWTC President and Director.

On lucky Friday, November 13th, Joshua will give a lecture on ‘Rhetoric and Resistance’ as keynote to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s (ACSA) national conference and the Universidad de Puerto Rico Escuela de Arquitectura’s 50th Anniversary celebration, which is hosting both concurrently.
A fantastic article by the Commercial Observer tells the story of how REX’s Winter Garden “floating platform” design led to Brookfield Property Partners’ selecting our firm to reimagine the concrete, pyramid-shaped 450 West 33rd Street, now called Five Manhattan West. “We thought of Joshua, because we really needed out-of-the-box thinking for it—someone who didn’t color in the lines.”—Sabrina Kanner, an executive vice president at Brookfield. Here is to open-minded clients!

We are honored and humbled to announce that Joshua Prince-Ramus has been awarded the Marcus Prize, which recognizes architects ‘with a commitment to design excellence, innovation, and a willingness to meet new challenges.’ The Prize is supported by the Marcus Corporation Foundation and administered by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning.
The jury noted REX’s “exuberant yet carefully-considered designs possess a broader cultural significance.” Blair Kamin, jury member and Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic of the Chicago Tribune, added: “They symbolize and help drive the millennial generation’s rediscovery of the city. We eagerly anticipate Joshua’s interaction with, and influence on, the design and real estate communities of Milwaukee and the upper Midwest.”
We are very grateful to the Marcus Corporation as well as the University and the jury—Blair Kamin; Tom Fisher, former Dean and Director of the Metropolitan Design Center at the University of Minnesota; Philip Hamp, FAIA, Principal, Vinci/Hamp Architects; and Robert Greenstreet, Dean, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning—for their support and faith in our practice.
Elliot Jane Fiore, brand new baby girl of Alysen Hiller and her husband Jeffery Fiore, was born September 11, 2015.
As new mom Aly said, she is “putting a little joy back in the somber day.” Although Aly will be away from us for a few months, we could not be happier for her and her beautiful family. Welcome to this wonderful and crazy world Elliot!
REX is designing an office building for Tishman Speyer in Washington DC’s Golden Triangle business district—2050 M Street—that will house CBS’s Face the Nation, among other tenants. Replacing an existing structure, the new 37,100 m² (400,000 sf) building will be constructed in two phases to enable uninterrupted broadcasting of the TV show. 2050 M Street is intended to set a new standard for trophy office space in the nation’s capital.
The latest issue of dearq-Journal of Architecture, published by Colombia’s Universidad de los Andes, includes our Vakko Fashion Center in its “Le Corbusier’s Collaborators” issue.
From the jury of the 2015 AIA NY Award who bestowed Vakko Fashion Center with an Honor Award in Architecture: “This rare project could be a case study that introduces a new approach to a curtain wall, and where design is embedded into every aspect.”
We thank you sincerely for this honor.
“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.
The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed.
It is so ordered.”

MEDIA HEADQUARTERS BUILDINGS
REX is pleased to release our Media Headquarters Buildings design. The 240,200 m² (2,600,000 sf) design for sister media companies features offices, studios, and common facilities (agora, amphitheater, auditorium, café, canteen, employee lounge, executive lounge, fine dining, gallery, health club, majlis, and theater).
Both sides of each tower incorporate 14.5 m (47.5 ft) diameter, retractable sunshades to shield the headquarters from the unrelenting Middle Eastern sun. The geometry and overlap of the sunshades reference a traditional Arab Mashrabiya pattern, meeting the media companies’ shared desire for infusing the buildings with local iconography.
The project has been nominated for an AZ People’s Choice Award in the Unbuilt Competitions category! Click here to vote (you must register first).

The structure—which “mingles the modernist sophistication befitting a Calvin Klein home with a little architectural disobedience and a touch of voyeurism”—will feature thirty models sporting the various collections and pieces from the home collection on display.
